Sirikit is the queen mother of Thailand. She was the queen consort of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and is the mother of King Vajiralongkorn.
Queen Sirikit is regarded as mother to all Thai people, thus her birthday is also celebrated as Mother’s Day and observed as a Thai national holiday.
The Early Years
Her Majesty Queen Sirikit is the daughter of H.H. Prince Chandaburi Suranath (M.C. Nakkhat Mongkol Kitiyakara) and his consort Mom Luang Bua Kitiyakara (nee Mom Luang Bua Snidvongs). Prince Chandaburi Suranath was the third son of H.R.H. Prince Chandaburi Suranath and H.S.H. Princess Absarasman Kitiyakara.
She was born on August 12, 1932. The year 1932 is a significant one: it was the year when constitutional monarchy was introduced into Thailand. Her father was a prominent and capable Major-General in the Thai Army at the time of the constitutional change. He left the army and went to serve as First Secretary at the Thai Legation in Washington D.C. As HM the Queen was then still a little child, she remained in Bangkok in the charge of her relatives. She did not see her parents again until their return home.
She attended the Kindergarten class at Rajini School. But subsequently went to St. Francis Xavier School at Samsen District in Bangkok in order to be nearer to home. Her father later on became Thai Minister to France, to Denmark and ultimately Ambassador to the Court of St. James. Her Majesty accompanied him and continued her general education in the three countries and lastly in Switzerland.
It was while her father was stationed in Paris that she first met His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was then studying in Switzerland but went now and then to Paris. The chance meeting in Paris ripened into friendship and understanding. When His Majesty met with a serious motor car accident in Geneva, Switzerland and had to stay in a hospital at Lausanne, Her Majesty was a frequent visitor. When His Majesty was well again and left the hospital, He was graciously pleased to arrange for Her Majesty to continue her studies at “Riante Rive”, a boarding school in Lausanne.

On July 19, 1949 Their Majesties were quietly engaged in Lausanne. On March 24, 1950, Their Majesties landed in Bangkok by ship after a long absence. On April 28 of the same year, the Royal Wedding took place at Padumawan Palace before the Queen Grandmother. As a democratic King and Queen, Their Majesties signed their names in the Registry Book of Marriages. Prince Chandaburi Suranath also appended his signature in the book to show that he permitted his daughter, who was then under age and required her father’s consent to the marriage, to go through the ceremony of marriage. His Majesty then crowned HM the Queen in conformity with Thai tradition.
Their Majesties have four children, namely: Princess Ubolratana, born on April 5, 1951, His Royal Highness Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, born on July 28, 1952, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, born on April 2, 1955 and Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn, born on July 4, 1957.
Their Majesties took great care in the education of their children in order to prepare them to meet the various duties which they had to undertake in later life. A choice had to be made between private tutoring and sending the children to an ordinary school. Private tutoring is a good medium for imparting knowledge, but it lacks human contact with children of similar ages. Attendance at an ordinary school also has its drawbacks. From experience, it would appear that teachers, pupils and even parents are subjected to biases either favorable or unfavorable. In order to avoid these inconveniences, His Majesty, with the entire concurrence of Her Majesty, set up a school in the compound of Chitralada Villa. Better control and supervision could thus be assured. The school was established and registered in accordance with the law in November 1958. There were about 78 children in the school. The classmates of the Royal children were sons and daughters of ordinary people of various vocations. In the year 2007 the number of Chitralada School children increased to 1,822 with 285 regular teachers and several part-time teachers.
Her Majesty has always been very devoted to Her children. During their younger days, she used to spend as much time with them as Her duties would allow, and kept close supervision on all their activities. When Her Majesty was in the United States of America during the State Visit with His Majesty in 1960, a TV representative asked Her what Her favorite hobby was. The reply was: “Looking after my children!”

In September 2018 I received a gift from the Chakrabhand Posayakrit Foundation as I was one of the news reporters who publicized the exhibition to celebrate its 75th year anniversary and the first rotating series of exhibitions from the National Artist Chakrabhand Posayakrit in Scene4. Without further ado, a secretary talked to me about the man who sent the gift to me: these are the splendid postcards from the Artist, Chusit Wijarnjoragij who works with the foundation , His portrait paintings are marvelous. I highly recommend his works for you to see and enjoy.

JY: Could you tell me about your inspiration in art?
CW: For me, art is the life of the artist who created it. As I grew up with this outlook, all my footsteps of working are like breathing in and out from today to the next day. I really like to learn more about the profoundness of working in all artistic types. I believe that working on art with love, faith, sincerity and determination could make any regular artwork to be a masterpiece and it could shine by itself. Any kind of working that could seep into the bones by the spirit of the artist has no words to explain. I am certain this is the value that everyone can touch with their own feelings like world-class classical music with no lyric yet its expressive melody can mesmerize and evoke the strong feelings of listeners.
I really love drawing figurative portraits. This type of realistic portrait goes beyond resemblance. I believe a masterpiece should reflect the life story, love, attachment, faith and intricacy and it could bring out the inspiration for portraying art. Growing up in a cultural land with the root of art & culture, Buddhism philosophy, literature, songs and poems, these are my hidden inspirations that I always add in my own paintings. I feel I am very fortunate to be born in the land of Buddhism and the people here always smile with love and faith. I really love and respect Thai kings and their royal families. This can be seen by my love and dedication to paint portraits of the king and queen for decades during the course of my artistic life. Both the King Rama IX and the queen of Rama IX are my inspiration to create art works and live. Their teachings of endeavor, works and merits are the spiritual guides that help and encourage me to overcome hardships and be successful.
Thanks to all my teachers who provided knowledge and guidelines for my works. They are my inspiration to create art on an international level. I am so lucky to study under outstanding Thai and foreign teachers who have knowledge and experience. Years ago, I had a chance to pay a visit to Chakrabhand Posayakrit (Thai national artist) and brought my portrait along with me to ask for his advice in painting a realistic portrait of the king, Rama IX. He gave me essential knowledge and suggestions about dimensions of beauty, the use of colors, delicacy and how to give life to art. I find that Chakrabhand is a masterful and talented artist. He is always one of my inspirations in learning and creating more art. Having a chance to study art in another country was one of the crucial paths in my life. During my time there, I went to visit several leading art museums and saw many masterpieces of world-class artists. My preferred types of art are the art pieces with deep origin and history. This is another reason for me to focus my learning on the working of old masters. Additionally, I received suggestions from Professor Thawan Duchanee (Thai national artist) when he went to exhibit his works with a group of Thai national artists in USA. He told me to study works of the Dutch artist Rembrandt (Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn). This was an important inspiration for me to study for a Master’s degree at the Academy of Art in New York. I studied works of intensive academy style, anatomy and looked up some old masters’ techniques and researched works of exceptional artists in the world-class museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I also studied with some exceptional instructors and artists. I received some advice about viewpoints and concepts and I learned how to work strongly like the professional artists. New York is considered to be the center of art world at the present. Everything is my way to work on art that molded, crystallized my concept and created me in the present.
JY: What about your previous works and accomplishments?
CW: Around five years ago, I was the first Thai artist to win the first prize for drawing from “American Artist Magazine” which was in the art circle for over 70 years and I was selected to be an Artist Member of California Art Club which was one of the most well-known art organizations in America. Moreover, I received a scholarship from Leslie T. Posey Foundation to study for a Master of Fine Arts at the New York Academy of Art. During my study there, I was honored as one of seven artists who exhibited their works in the exhibition “Painting from the Past” curated by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a Thai artist, this made me so proud that the exhibition was successful.

อยากให้คุณพูดถึงแรงบันดาลใจในการทำงานศิลปะ
ชูศิษฐ์: สำหรับผม ศิลปะก็คือชีวิตของศิลปินผู้สร้างสรรค์ผลงาน
ผมเติบโตมาพร้อมกับสิ่งๆนี้
ทุกฝีก้าวของการทำงานจึงเป็นเสมือนลมหายใจเข้าออกที่กำลังเดินทางจากวันนี้ไปวันพรุ่งนี้
ผมชอบศึกษาหาความรู้ ชอบความลึกซึ้งในการทำงานของศิลปะทุกๆแขนง
ผมเชื่อว่าการทำงานศิลปะด้วยความรักและศรัทธาความจริงใจ ความมุ่งมั่น
จะสามารถทำให้ผลงานศิลปะนั้นเป็นชิ้นเอกและสามารถฉายแสงเปล่งประกายออกมาได้ด้วยตนเอง

อีกทั้งพระคุณครูบาอาจารย์ทุกท่าน ที่ได้ให้ความรู้ แนะนำแนวทางในการทำงานศิลปะของผม ตลอดจนเป็นแรงบันดาลใจในการก้าวเดินการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะในระดับสากล ผมรู้สึกโชคดีมากที่ได้เรียนกับครูบาอาจารย์เก่งๆ ผู้มีประสบการณ์และความรู้ทั้งในและต่างประเทศ ได้มีโอกาสเข้าไปกราบอาจารย์จักรพันธุ์ โปษยกฤต (ศิลปินแห่งชาติ) พร้อมทั้งนำผลงานเข้าไปกราบขอคำแนะนำในการวาดพระบรมรูปและภาพเหมือน ท่านได้มอบความรู้และให้คำแนะนำ ในเรื่องมิติของความงาม การถ่ายทอดการใช้สี ความละเอียดละออ

ของผม ผมได้มีโอกาสไปชมพิพิธภัณฑ์ชั้นนำได้เห็นผลงานมาสเตอร์พีชของศิลปินระดับโลก ผมชอบผลงานศิลปะที่มีรากเหง้ามีประวัติศาสตร์ ซึ่งเป็นเหตุผลหนึ่งที่ทำให้ผมโฟกัสไปที่การเรียนรู้การทำงานอย่างโอลด์มาสเตอร์ อีกทั้งได้รับคำแนะนำจาก อาจารย์ถวัลย์ ดัชนี (ศิลปินแห่งชาติ)เมื่อครั้งที่ท่านเดินทางไปแสดงงานกลุ่มศิลปินแห่งชาติที่อเมริกา ว่าอยากให้ศึกษาผลงานของจิตรกร ชาวดัตช์ ชื่อ แรมบรันต์ (Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn) ซึ่งเป็นแรงบันดาลใจสำคัญให้ผมเดินทางไปศึกษาต่อระดับ ปริญญาโท สาขา จิตรกรรมที่ New YorkAcademy of Art นครนิวยอร์ค ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา การศึกษาการทำงานแนว

ชูศิษฐ์: เมื่อประมาณห้าปีที่แล้วผมเป็นศิลปินไทยคนแรกที่ได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศจากนิตยสาร “American Artist Magazine” ที่อยู่ในวงการศิลปะมามากกว่า 70 ปีและผมยังได้รับการคัดเลือกให้เป็นสมาชิกศิลปินของ California Art Club ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในองค์กรศิลปะที่เป็นที่รู้จักมากที่สุดในอเมริกา นอกเหนือจากนี้ผมได้รับ
ทุนการศึกษาจากมูลนิธิ Leslie T. Posey ให้ศึกษาในระดับปริญญาโทสาขาวิจิตรศิลป์ที่ New York Academy of Art ตอนที่เรียนอยู่ที่นั่นผมได้รับเกียรติให้เป็นหนึ่งในเจ็ดศิลปินที่แสดงผลงานในนิทรรศการ “Painting from the Past” ที่จัดขึ้นโดย The Metropolitan Museum of Art ในฐานะที่เป็นศิลปินไทยคนหนึ่ง ผมรู้สึกภูมิใจมากที่งานนิทรรศการประสบความสำเร็จ
ในปีพ.ศ. 2558 ผมเรียนจบและเดินทางกลับมาที่ประเทศไทย ผมตั้งปณิธานกับตัวเองไว้ว่าจะทำงานศิลปะเพื่อประเทศชาติโดยการทำงานเป็นผู้สนับสนุนผลงานชุด “Royal Portraits” หนึ่งในผลงานของผมได้รับการอัญเชิญขึ้นเป็นปกของนิตยสารดิฉันนิตยสารผู้หญิงที่มีชื่อเสียงและของเมืองไทย ผมยังได้เป็นผู้จัดงานนิทรรศการศิลปะที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดแห่งปีถ วายเป็นพระราชกุศลแด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรภูมิพลอดุลยเดช รัชกาลที่ 9 โดยรายได้สมทบทุนมูลนิธิอานันทมหิดล ผมเป็นหนึ่งในคณะกรรมการตัดสินผลงานภาพวาดในหัวข้อ“สมเด็จพระเทพฯในดวงใจ” เพื่อมูลนิธิเด็กอีกด้วย ถึงปีพ.ศ. 2561 ผมได้รับการคัดเลือก
เป็น 1 ใน 300 ไฮ ฟลายเออร์ จัดอันดับโดยโดยนิตยสาร Prestige (ประเทศไทย)ถึง 2 ปีซ้อน
